Terri,

PayPal charges 2.9% + $0.30 USD for each online transaction.  In MSCW's
case, PayPal subtracts the amount available for withdrawal by $1.07 for
each credit card and $1.05 for PayPal transfer for each membership
transaction right upfront.    

No doubt, credit card and online transfers are a convenience, however,
adding a financial third party to the transaction is no means free.  

The $0.50 additional charge was my effort to try and share the cost of
this convenience.  Considering you won't need a $0.39 stamp, a $0.04
envelope plus your time to the mail box, I figured members would be
willing to help offset some of the $1.07 PayPal charges considering it
is about the same cost as applying through the post office.  

MSCW members are choosing the online payment option 14 to 1 as compared
to hardcopy mailing.  MSCW membership volunteers also save time
processing applications, issue cards faster and get back to organizing
events sooner.  While MSCW looses $0.57 per each online transaction, it
has proven to be a WIN WIN convenience for the vast majority. 

I hope you see the $0.50 I added as being the true cost to you as
compared to if you had hardcopy mailed your application through the post
office while at the same time don't mind helping MSCW lessen the $1.07
fee.

I too was surprised that Paypal charged me $.50  to make my membership
payment. I have used Paypal for years for Ebay and never had to pay
extra.
Whats up with that. Its supposed to be a FREE service.
