[MSCW list] MSCW Digest, Vol 65, Issue 5 - More on clutch noises

Thanks to all who commented on clutch noises, but I think we are probably not dealing with the same problem. Maybe I should have been more specific in my first e-mail, so here are some more details: A. The car has 110K miles, but supposedly only about 26K on this clutch (car was bought used and previous owner said he put in new clutch at about 84K miles). B. The clutch noise is a new development that began only a few months ago. C. The noise is not a momentary chirp, as some have described, but a very definite screech or squeal that lasts a couple of seconds. C. The noise occurs on first start of the day when pulling away from home with cold engine. Usually goes away completely after a minute or two of driving, although it does occasionally happen at other times, but not as loudly. D. It does not seem to be affecting operation, which feels normal, so I'm reluctant to ask a mechanic to fix something that ain't broke - at least not yet.

I'm still thinking throw-out bearing, but glad to hear other theories if anyone has them.

Conrad

The clutch on our 92 MX3-GS also made a slight squeal or chirp
eriodically, maybe once a week when starting in first gear. It made
his noise from the day that we purchased the car new until somebody
ost control in the rain and totaled it while it was parked. (RIP) The
hirp never seemed to get worse over the 130k miles that we had it. I
lways thought that it was some funny resonance of the friction
aterials as the clutch was being engaged, but this was mere
peculation on my part.

I've noticed an occasional faint chirp from the clutch in my '88 RX-7 over
the past 5000 miles or so. Not sure it's getting any worse. I only hear it
when starting out in first gear, and then only if I let the clutch out
really fast. By letting it out more gradually, I can avoid the chirp/squeak
sound. Once in a blue moon, I'll hear a chirp when upshifting from say
second to third, but this is quite rare. The car has about 45,000 miles on
it, so I assume it's still on its original clutch.

Now I'm wondering if I don't need to have my clutch checked and/or
 replaced...
