[MSCW list] NA Miata Airbag Computer Issues

Thanks to all for your suggestions and help on this. To recap, I replaced my totaled original airbag computer module with a used but serviceable unit, and everything appears to work as it should for now. (Tip for you NA people: If your airbag warning light begins to flash six times with a pause in repeating cycles, UNPLUG the thing right away!!! It is my understanding that this code indicates that one or more of the five electrolytic capacitors in the unit have gone bad. These are readily available and replaceable. But if the module remains active, the loss of those capacitors will soon take out the thermal fuse, rendering the unit inoperable - and the thermal fuse is nowhere to be found.)

These NA modules are getting scarce. I checked with Brown's Mazda a few weeks ago (prior to finding the used unit), and was told that they had one in stock - for $468!!! (Of course, the club discount would help - a little.) I figured I'd find a used unit or just go without before paying that much.

Thanks, Jen, for your input RE: The airbag bypass trick, but as Bill K. noted, my situation is the other way around. My airbag is fine (so far as I know), but the computer module went out. The airbag bypass is for a car with an operable computer module, but no airbag. Let us all be thankful that those of us with very early Miatae can relicense them under the antique/classic rules and avoid future inspections, if it comes to that. Sometimes there are advantages to getting older.
