[MSCW list] Water leak on drivers side

Conrad,

First the easy check. There are drains on either side of the A pillar. The
driver's side drain may be clogged. If you move the top back a few inches
you will see the drain opening at the top of the A pillar. Pour some water
into the hole to see if it drains out the bottom of the car. If it does
you're good to go. If not, you will need to clear the drain with a small
wire or for a more elegant approach you might want to get a "Trombone Flex
Brush" to clear the drain. Not sure if the elegant approach will work with
these drains due to their size, but you definitely can use it to clear the
rear drains.

Second and more difficult problem. The heater core, which is on the driver's
side under the dash, may be leaking. Warm up the car, run the heater and see
if you get condensation on the windshield/windows. If you do, then the
problem is likely a hater core or hose leak. This is not an easy fix, but
click on the link below for a DIY, how-to video.

Good luck!

After a rain, the carpet on the driver's side of my 2003 Miata is saturated
with water.? The top is only a year old and there is no sign that it is
leaking.? The shelf behind the seats is dry, so the drain holes back there
must not be plugged up.? The portion of carpet that runs up to the bottom of
the door is not wet, so the water is apparently not coming in under the
door.?Weather stripping around the door looks okay, if not great, with no
visible breaks.? I've cleaned out all the leaves and debris I can reach from
under the hood, especially around the windshield wiper arms.? I'm stumped.?
Anyone have any idea how the water is getting in and what to do about it??
Is this a common problem with Miatas of that age that sit outside?? (Never
had it with my 1991 Miata, which was 20 years old when I sold it.)
Conrad
