The Drive: Our all-Day trip in May will depart the Frederick Keys stadium (Harry Grove Field)in Frederick, MD at 9:00 AM on May 8th. We'll head north on US15 to Emmitsburg, Maryland, then head west on the Buchanan Trail to join US30 westbound. We'll stop at the two-hour mark in Breezewood PA for a quick break, then get back on US30W to Stonycreek, PA, for lunch at the Lincoln Cafe* just before noon. We'll depart the Cafe around 1 PM and arrive at the Flight 93 Memorial in about three minutes.
We'll have 2-3 hours at the memorial, depending on what people want to see. Information on the memorial is at https://www.nps.gov/flni/index.htm. I intend to see/hear the Tower of Voices, for sure.
When we depart the Memorial, we'll join US219 south, and then get on US40-Alt East to Frostburg, MD where we'll stop for gas so everyone will have plenty. We'll then get on I-68 eastbound through Cumberland, and take it to where it merges into I-70 and US522, where the drive will officially end. Once we're on I-68 folks are free to take their own route home (like I-70) or follow me back to Fairfax County as I head down US522 south to Winchester, VA, and get on US50 eastbound. I'm planning on stopping for dinner at the Social House Restaurant in South Riding, VA, and will make a reservation for anyone who wants to come along.
Dining: The Lincoln Cafe* is well rated on Yelp (my secret to finding good food) and you can find more information at https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-lincoln-cafe-stoystown?osq=lincoln+cafe
*The planning is based upon the restaurant having parking and capacity to handle a group our size. Don't be surprised if I change our lunch stop.
Logistics: Start Date/Time: 5/8/2021 at 9:00 AM. Rain date will be 5/15/2021. The signup genius is at https://bit.ly/mscw2021-se-2. The signup is limited to 18 cars for this drive. Please do not mark yourself as "going" on Facebook until you have registered on the signup genius. We will have multiple cars with GPS since that has worked very well recently. The map list (with links to GPX/KML files) at https://www.midatlanticscenicdrives.com/maps.html will be updated by April 30th. There will be one Google Map, one KML file, and one GPX file that will take you from the Start to the End (I-68/I-70 merge).
