[MSCW list] MSCW Digest, Vol 81, Issue 7

Have a low mileage 1990 Miata and finally have to take in for timing belt
and water pump as well as complete brake and shock replacements. Had to
procure a bunch of parts. I would highly recommend checking RockAuto.com
for online replacement parts. They carry a tremendous inventory of
aftermarket parts. But the best service is that for most parts they offer a
range of suppliers; from inexpensive clearly foreign manufacturers to
better and high quality well known manufacturers. It is up to you to
select. But all the parts are offered at prices that I find are less
expensive than others, including partsgeek. If you are able to combine your
order to just one warehouse the shipping cost is quite reasonable. I just
replaced one brake caliper on my van myself and the core charge was $42,
which I returned to RockAuto using their shipping option that prints out
and the cost was only $7 for FedEx, which they deducted from the deposit
upon the core return and then immediately refunded the rest to my credit
card. The return box must have weighed over 10#, and at the same time I
needed to mail to my sister a camera packed in a box of the same size that
weighed about 4# and Fed Ex wanted $22 w/o any insurance. Went to USPS for
that.

I really appreciate all the recommendations from your experiences. I have
had some terrible experiences from auto shops, including even at the
dealers, so I have prefered to do all work myself. But I am older and I
tire of crawling on the ground for hours so this time for my Miata overhaul
I am going to try to take it to a small shop near me in College Park, Md.
that a friend recommended which charges very reasonable prices. Will
provide an update on how it works out.

Brett
