I have been running a full synthetic since the early 1980s. For all
practical purposes engine wear ceases when you use a synthetic. If you take
a engine that has had cheap oil and poor oil changes you will have
troubles. Oil leaks and burning oil.
I ran Castrol GTX in my 323 until I reached 30k miles. I then switched to
Syntech and never looked back. I went to 7.5k mile oil changes instead of
3k oil changes. At 323k miles it ran great and didn't use a drop of oil
between changes.
At 200k miles I burnt the exhaust valves due to a coolant leak. When I
opened the engine up there was no varnish, no wear on the cam, lifters,
rockers, or cylinder walls. The pistons were clean.
I ran Syntech in my Protégé. I traded it at 147k miles. Ran great and
didn't use a drop of oil in it. I now have an Accord. I am having a lot of
trouble finding 5-50 Edge so I am using Amsoil. 7.5k mile oil changes.
42mpg at 55 and it doesn't use a drop of oil.
I just bought a RX-8. After I reassemble the engine I am going to run
Amsoil 5-50 in it with Amsoil 2 stroke being supplied to the metering pump
for the Apex and Corner seals.
I am a retired Master Automobile Technician and a Rotary Engine Technician.
If your engine isn't leaking, doesn't burn oil, has had a good quality oil,
frequent oil changes, and has less than 100k miles on it switching to a
synthetic will be fine.
All new vehicles use synthetic oil in them.
Thanks, rich!
