[MSCW list] MSCW Digest, Vol 96, Issue 12

I just finished an install of an R-134a system and it's working well. I
know that you'll need a new R-134a compressor, but you or your mechanic
might want to confirm that the condenser is the same for your old R-12 and
a new R-134a system. Mazda part numbers can help you confirm.

A few notes based on my experience:

Installing the new AC/Power steering belt is fiddly. It's a very tight fit
over the pulleys but doable.
Install all new Schrader valves and O-ring seals.
The installation manual recommends raising the front wheels 300mm, and that
is plenty of space. You'll still need good working room under the car to
install the compressor and hoses. I used a purpose built set of ramps.
I have a 1990 Mazda booklet on the step-by-step installation that I can
copy for you and/or your mechanic. It would let you know what's involved
in the job.
Cardinal Plaza Shell in Springfield did the refrigerant charging, leak
checks and test of the system for me. I didn't want to get hurt by *really
*cold refrigerant from some home charging kit. Their price was about
market price and they have the tools to do the job.
Also have some new bolts/nuts/parts that I over bought for my install.
You're welcome to those if you need them.

If you have any questions, give me a call at 703 439 0836. I hope this
helps.
