I have to talk to one restaurant to see how full they are, and I'll likely post the primary route and alternate (in case of weather) on Tuesday evening. For now, please keep the 12th and 13th free. I'm hoping we'll have the foliage changing then and that the recent rain improves things. It's been a dry summer, so what 'peak' will mean is anyones guess, but we can be hopeful. Our drive will be a rerun of a route we took six years ago, leading us to the Hickory Bridge Farm near Gettysburg, PA, where the food is outstanding... think of it as a rehearsal for Thanksgiving as we will eat family style. Our drive will start at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, and we'll head up US15 and make a U-turn (this one's on purpose) to drive through Catoctin Mountains and past the lake fed by Cunningham Falls. We'll make our way north into PA and take a route west of Gettysburg before looping east and south to take us to Hickory Bridge Farms (https://www.hickorybridgefarm.com/) where the entrees are Oven Fried Chicken, Roast Beef with Dressing and Crab Imperial. Because I have to tell the restaurant on Monday (10/7) how many people we'll have, THE SIGNUP WILL CLOSE ON 10/6 AT 5 PM. When the meal is over, I'll lead everybody back to US15 just north of the Mason/Dixon line, and from there I can lead folks on a more meandering route back to Frederick if you're not in a hurry. Logistics: Assembly - We'll begin to gather at Harry Grove Stadium (by the field entrance across from the cemetery) In Frederick at 10:45 AM. There's a Sheetz nearby, so please have an empty bladder and plenty of gasoline. Departure - We'll depart at 11:15 AM Time/Distance - The route to the restaurant is 75 miles and will take us about 2.5 hours, so we can arrive by 1:45 for a 2:00 pm meal. Food - Please check the website (https://www.hickorybridgefarm.com/) for details. The base cost per person (family style, eat hearty) is $40 including everything except tax and tip. Car limits - 22 cars total. Weather - This will be a rain or shine drive, since we'll have reservations for the meal, Technology - I will bring nine extra Midland GMRS radios. If you want to bring your own GMRS radio, we will be using Channel 30 on Midland Radios, or 462.7000 MHz frequency and CTCSS 17 for the privacy code. In Glympse, we'll use the !mscw_cruise tag to keep track of each other. RSVP via signup genius at https://bit.ly/mscw2024-SC-7 (NO LATER THAN 10/6). Don't use Facebook to indicate you're going. David Vanaman From tim.metzinger at outlook.com Tue Oct 15 02:20:54 2024 From: tim.metzinger at outlook.com (Timothy Metzinger) Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2024 00:20:54 +0000 Subject: [MSCW list] Midland GMRS battery life - for folks who own their walkie-talkies Message-ID: This will be of interest to people who have bought the Midland GXT radios for our group drives - the rechargeable batteries wear out. Lately I've been finding that the rechargeable batteries haven't been lasting as long as they should, and radios have been dying when running for more than a few hours. So I wrote midland asking how frequently they need to be replaced. They're nickel - metal hydride (not lithium) so they do have a finite shelf life. Midland suggests replacing them every 9-12 months depending on usage. They also suggest removing them from the radio if the radio will be sitting idle for a while. The GOOD news is that they're not that expensive - Midland sells a pair (AVP17) for $25 at their web site: https://midlandusa.com/products/avp17-rechargeable-batteries?_pos=1&_psq=avp17&_ss=e&_v=1.0 And Amazon sells the Midland batteries for less, and also offers some aftermarket versions as well, such as this 5-pack: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HYW16R6/?coliid=I1N0UX78TD8PEY&colid=2HTQ30KAF6XL3&ref_=list_c_wl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1. Since my radios are all a couple years old, it's not surprising that the batteries are wearing out. I will be a guinea pig and buy one five-pack and test them over the winter. Know that you can put in 4 AA batteries instead of the rechargable, and there is a car charger that will connect your cigarette lighter socket and charge two radios as well, it's the Midland LXADD unit. This, of course, was in tandem with replacing the upholstery with a leather upgrade. I cannot say for sure that it is easy, or even possible, to removed the factory upholstery, install the seat heaters, then re-install the factory upholstery. There is probably more labor (and cost) involved doing it that way than ripping out the old upholstery, and installing new. Also factor in the current upholstery is 30 years old or so and probably has some complications related to that. The shops we used for replacing Miata soft-tops also did the upholstery for us, and those shops were Sure Fit in Arlington and Pollet?s in Fairfax City. This year, on December 7th or 8th, we'll end up in Baltimore to visit 'A Miracle on 34th Street' (https://www.facebook.com/Miracleon34thSt) where a complete block is all lit up by the neighborhood. The plan is to attempt this drive on Saturday, December 7th, with the 8th as a backup day for bad weather. The drive is in two parts - an optional pre-cruise and the part where we go see the lights in Baltimore. The optional pre-cruise will start at the Towson United Methodist Church - we'll leave there at 3:25 PM, cruise around the Loch Raven Reservoir (we visited this area in 2023) and get to Mcfaul's Ironhorse Tavern around 4 PM for an early meal. We'll leave McFauls and be at the Loch Raven High School East Parking Lot around 5:25, and that's where we'll meet other folks who want to join us for the drive into Baltimore. The main drive will leave the Loch Raven High School East at 5:35 PM, and make our way along MD41 to Lake Montebello where we'll head West on E. 33rd St and drive around Johns Hopkins and across Wyman Park to find Chestnut Ave, where we'll head north and drive through the lit up block around 6 PM (if they don't have it blocked) and then those who want to stay will find street parking and walk around the lit up block. Once done it's a straight shot down Kesswick Road to join I-83 which can take us into Baltimore to pick up roads home (I-96, US40/I-70). Logistics: Assembly and Departure - The pre-drive will start at Towson United Methodist Church (501 Hampton Ln, Towson, MD 21286). We'll assemble around 3 PM and depart around 3:25 PM. The main drive will start at Loch Raven High School (in the East parking lot along Cromwell Bridge Rd) at 5:25 or so and we'll leave at 5:35 PM. Time/Distance - The total distance is less than 30 miles, and the the pre-drive will take about 25 minutes, and the main drive will take about 30 minutes, with time for the pre-drive to eat at Mcfaul's and to congregate at the second drive. We should get to the lighted block around 6 PM, so folks can easily get home by 9 PM or earlier. Food - Folks who come for the early pre-drive, we'll have food around 4 PM at McDaul's Ironhorse Tavern (https://www.mcfaulsironhorse.com) Menues are available on line. Car limits - I'm gonna set a limit of 20 cars for the pre-drive, and no limit for the second drive, although parking will likely be a challenge. Weather - The drive will take place on Saturday, December 7th, with the 8th being reserved as a bad-weather make-up day. Technology - I will bring nine extra Midland GMRS radios. If you want to bring your own GMRS radio, we will be using Channel 30 on Midland Radios, or 462.7000 MHz frequency and CTCSS 17 for the privacy code. In Glympse, we'll use the !mscw_cruise tag to keep track of each other. RSVP via signup genius at https://bit.ly/mscw2024-sc-8 . Don't use Facebook to indicate you're going.
