Hi Jack,
We installed heated seats in many cars, including Miatas, at both dealerships I worked at. This, of course, was in tandem with replacing the upholstery with a leather upgrade. I cannot say for sure that it is easy, or even possible, to removed the factory upholstery, install the seat heaters, then re-install the factory upholstery. There is probably more labor (and cost) involved doing it that way than ripping out the old upholstery, and installing new. Also factor in the current upholstery is 30 years old or so and probably has some complications related to that.
The shops we used for replacing Miata soft-tops also did the upholstery for us, and those shops were Sure Fit in Arlington and Pollet’s in Fairfax City.
