Now that the region has had an actual snowstorm, it's time to start thinking about the 2025 driving season. I figured to share my thoughts and get your feedback. The season will run from March to October with a couple of drives each month - a destination trip where we are going to visit a particular place or event (these drives will take most of a day or even have an overnight), and a shorter drive on fun/scenic roads.
In March, we'll have the ability to tune up our cars (at a maintenance day at my house) and our driving skills (on some fun roads in the area), and we'll likely also have a destination trip to Berryville WV for the Blue Ridge Hunt Point-to-Point races event, which we enjoyed last year.
In April, we'll have a Sunday brunch at Patty-O's cafe, then take US211 to the Skyline drive and head SOUTH (we normally go North) and take US33 East back to join US29. Our shorter scenic drive will be in Virginia.
In May, the destination will be Cass, WV, where we'll take a steam train up Bald Knob. The scenic drive will be in Maryland.
In June, we'll have two destinations - the Airshow in Ocean City MD (featuring the Blue Angels) and a trip to Ticonderoga NY to the set of the original Star Trek series. Bill Shatner will be present at the set during the last weekend in June, so we'll try and plan an overnight trip there so Shatner fans can meet him and get pictures and autographs, and folks who have already met him can tour the set the same day. The schedule will be finalized in May, but you can find some info (and Shatner pricing) at https://startrektour.com/product-category/2025-06-shatner/. The scenic drive will likely be a circle tour around the tri-state area near Harper's Ferry with a meal at one of the great restaurants up there.
In July, I think we'll take another trip up to Pennsylvania to visit Knoebel's amusement park. We won't tour all the covered bridges this time (shorter drive) and will have plenty of time to ride the rides and play miniature golf. The scenic drive will be in Maryland. I may also try and squeeze in a long day trip to the Back of the Dragon and other roads in that area.
In August, we'll likely head up to Bedford County PA, to visit a few attractions - Gravity Hill (a section of road where water and cars appear to roll uphill), a walk though an abandoned tunnel from the original Pennsylvania Turnpike, lunch at the Roadkill Cafe (great pie!), and perhaps a trip to the Flight 93 memorial. The scenic drive will be our annual "go-fast" event on Fort Valley Road with lunch at the Southern Kitchen in New Market.
In September, it's my 30th anniversary, so I'm planning on heading up to Boston, and am still planning out the route. Folks will be welcome to join us for the trip up, enjoy the city (we may stay outside and ride the T into town), and make their way home on their own schedule. The scenic drive will likely be in Maryland along the eastern shore of the Potomac and another visit to B Doughnut.
In October, our desination will be Lime Rock in western Connecticut for the 2025 MiataCon, where there will be some track and autocross events (autocross on a track rather than laid out with cones) and other fun stuff The scenic drive is unknown.
In early November, I may take the Auto Train from Lorton to Sanford VA, then take US Highways and other roads back after a visit to Cape Canaveral. This will probably be a five day excursion, but early enough so that the Blue Ridge Parkway won't have gotten any snow. Like the anniversary trip, others are welcome to join if they can get the free time.
Drive safely and HAVE FUN,
