[MSCW list] MSCW Digest, Vol 103, Issue 3

Hi Jan: I too was pleasantly surprised that the new, large-format
"paperback" came out in big print. At 74 my eyes aren't what they used to
be... The publishing world seems to be on that page too, although I think
they're more into lowering production costs. Obviously this format can be
turned into a hardback rather easily, without further printing/formatting.
I admit that the Miata angle was used more as a "draw" for readers, but I
did include more regarding rotary engines, near the end of the story. (I
won't spoil that for you if you haven't gotten that far yet.) The first gen
Rx-7s used to be my hobby car of choice. I owned more than a few of them
back when they were cheap used cars. Too bad they've essentially
disappeared from the road. But I still have my trusty (and non-rusty) 1990
Miata to play around with (in pieces at the moment).
My motivation for MALLMAGEDDON was simply to write using the maxim "write
what you know" within a future-fiction scenario. I kept the location
"local" for the same reason, although I may have inadvertently limited
interested readership. And, like my hero, Robert A. Heinlein, I wanted to
interject a bit of social commentary into the story. I also hope that some
rich someone takes one of my appendix concepts and turns same into reality.
I hope you enjoy the story. I'm told that my first effort, SPACE CADET, is
actually a better read. More chuckles per chapter, since it's a less
serious story. Try it and let me know.
Sincerely,
Jim Hull
