On our drives we tend to use GMRS walkie-talkies, often Midland GXT1000s, to stay in touch while we're cruising in case some of us get stuck at a lite (or, god forbid, have a mechanical issue). I've been doing this for about 6 years, and I've noticed that the batteries in the radios don't last as long as they used to - even freshly recharged, they'd die in a couple of hours. So I called Midland and they recommended replacing the battery packs periodically (every 3-5 years). I went searching on Amazon and found aftermarket batteries that are less expensive than the Midlands, but are drop in replacements for less money. They also come in 2, 5, and 10-packs. I've replaced all the batteries in my 11-odd handhelds, and am quite happy, they retain a charge for a long time, and will still transmit at full power even after sitting idle (listening only) for hours.
Just wanted folks who've bought these radios to know about the option. I'll likely replace mine every 3 or 4 years.
